I. Core Function
It is the main transmission component of ball mill and rod mill. The output power of the reducer is transmitted to the small gear assembly through the coupling; the small gear meshes with the large gear ring on the cylinder, reducing speed and increasing torque, and driving the grinding cylinder to rotate at a low speed to complete the grinding of the materials. The rotational speed of the small gear is much higher than that of the large gear ring, resulting in greater wear and impact loads, making it a wear-prone part of the mill.

1. Small Gear (Driving Gear): It is divided into straight tooth / bevel tooth, with the module matching that of the large gear ring; commonly used materials are 42CrMo and 35SiMn forged steel, quenched and tempered + gear surface quenching, with a tooth surface hardness higher than that of the large gear by more than 30HB, wear-resistant and fracture-resistant teeth.
2. Small gear shaft: A single-piece forged shaft, with bearings and coupling installed at both ends, bearing all the torque of the gears.
3. Bearings + Bearing Housing (Washer Housing): Double-supported sliding/rolling bearings, supporting the gear shaft, equipped with sealing and oil cup lubrication.
4. Base, end cover, sealing parts, fasteners: Fixed and dust-proof, leak-proof, ensuring the meshing accuracy.
III. Working Characteristics
1. Heavy-duty high-speed: Continuously withstand impact, alternating torque, harsh working conditions with dust and moisture;
2. Large speed ratio difference: For every 1 revolution of the large gear ring, the small gear rotates several dozen revolutions, the wear rate is several times that of the large gear;
3. High assembly accuracy requirements: Excessive center distance, tooth side clearance, and coaxiality deviation will cause severe vibration, gear breakage, and bearing burnout.
IV. Common Differences between Ball Mill and Rod Mill
The structures and principles of the small gear assemblies of both are completely the same. Only the module, number of teeth, and shaft diameter are matched according to the specifications of the cylinder body: The cylinder body of the rod mill is longer, and the feed particles are larger. Under the same diameter, the module and shaft diameter of the small gear of the rod mill are usually larger, and the bearing capacity is stronger.
V. Daily Key Points
Regularly add lubricating oil to prevent dry grinding and pitting;
Regularly check tooth surface wear, meshing clearance, and bearing temperature;
If tooth surface peeling, pitting, abnormal noise exceeds the standard, the assembly needs to be replaced in time to avoid damaging the large gear ring and causing significant downtime losses.
